This project will explore how body image is affected after traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or amputation, and whether this impacts quality of life.

After serious injury, many people experience changes in their body and physical abilities. These changes can also affect how someone sees and feels about their body (body image), which may influence wellbeing, confidence, and participation in everyday life. However, body image is not often addressed in rehabilitation.

The aim is to develop a tool to assess body image changes after injury and use this knowledge to inform better support, resources, and future rehabilitation approaches.

Adelaide University - Body Image Study

If you’re recovering from a spinal cord injury, brain injury, or a significant limb injury, you may be eligible to take part in an exciting clinical trial exploring a new approach to rehabilitation.

The Adelaide University, in partnership with SA Health and Determined2, is investigating the effects of Immersion Therapy on physical, mental, and social recovery following traumatic injury. Immersion Therapy is an innovative, water-based intervention that uses an underwater breathing apparatus to fully support participants in a pool environment. This allows for safe, guided movement and exercise tailored to individual needs, with the goal of improving physical capacity, mental health, and overall wellbeing.

Participants in the study will attend one session per week for 16 weeks, delivered by trained Allied Health Professionals.

We are currently recruiting individuals aged 18-65 who are within 12 months of discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Participation is completely free, and eligible participants will receive up to 16 weeks of Immersion Therapy at no cost.
