Royal Automobile Association of SA R25025: Commenced 20/01/2026

Continuation of the Street Smart Primary road safety education program that is delivered to students across South Australia.

Road safety is a life skill that we believe should start early. That’s why we offer Street Smart Primary — free, road safety education lessons for South Australian schools. These lessons help children learn how to stay safe as pedestrians, passengers, cyclists and scooter riders.

Since launching in 2014, Street Smart Primary has reached thousands of children. The program has helped students build the knowledge, skills and behaviours to stay safe around roads.

Royal Automobile Association of SA R25012: Commenced 1/12/2025

Provide funding to support the Street Smart High events to be held in September 2025, 2026 and 2027. Held since 2009, Street Smart High educates students, on the reality of a road crash, explores the consequences that occur afterwards and gives students advice and skills to avoid crashes.

Royal Automobile Association of SA Inc. (RAA) – R24013: Commenced 1/04/2025

This proposal is to fund 20 schools to be a part of a Markers Empire/Street Smart Primary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) extension project in 2025. This project will be a new collaboration between three key road safety partners – THINK! Road Safety, Lifetime Support Authority, RAA and Makers Empire. The program uses a design led thinking approach to grow students’ awareness of road safety and empower them as problem solvers.

Brain Injury SA R24017: Commenced 7/10/2024

There is a need to create better understanding of brain injury in the community in general and in particular amongst support workers providing direct care and support. Generic training in support work does not cover this with sufficiency.  BISA has been running a general introduction training for support workers with some success, but this does not provide sufficient depth, particularly in the relevance of brain injury in challenging behaviours and approaches to their management. Support workers are often given time away from work to attend but cannot afford the cost of attending training.

This proposal would build on the introductory training already developed, providing an intermediate and advanced version to be accessed and freely available to support workers.  Utilising BISA’s practical exposure to working in this area of disability and its specialist Allied Health expertise, it will develop these models for trial delivery and evaluation.  Potential to develop for micro – credentialling?

Royal Automobile Association of SA Inc. (RAA) - R24004: Commenced 23/09/2024

Provide funding to support the Street Smart High event to be held from September 24-26, 2024. Held since 2009, Street Smart High educates students, on the reality reality of a road crash, explores the consequences that occur afterwards and gives students advice and skills to avoid crashes. The program continues to grow with a record number of schools booked in to attend this year. For the first time the event will be held over 3 days with more than 12,000 people invited to attend.

Moto-CAP (Agreement with Transport for NSW to support the MotoCAP initiative) GA00086: Commenced 1/7/2018

The Moto-CAP purpose is to evaluate public reporting on characteristics and comparative performance of motorcycle protective clothing and drive the awareness of the availability of such clothing. Moto-CAP provides comprehensive information on safety and comfort ratings for clothing in the category of jackets and pants. Gloves are not awarded a rating for comfort as it is not possible to source the material from gloves compatible with test equipment.

The testing regime to determine the safety and comfort ratings is based on ‘impact protection’, ‘burst resistance’ and ‘abrasion resistance’. The number of stars provides a comparison of how well specific garments resist the destructive forces in a crash and are displayed for public view on the Moto-CAP website. The Lifetime Support Authority continues to provide support to the Moto-CAP initiative in an effort to mitigate future motorcycle related injury for motorcycle users.

Royal Automobile Association of SA Inc. (RAA) R2211: Commenced 1/7/2018

Continuation of the Street Smart Primary road safety education program that is delivered to students across South Australia.

Road safety education is not a compulsory subject in schools. As a result, many students receive very little or no formal education in this area. This program sends highly experienced and qualified teachers into schools to teach students age-appropriate road safety skills and knowledge. By working directly in schools. in an engaging and interactive way, we believe will help to establish early adoption of safe road user behaviour and to help to improve road safety outcomes.

Street Smarty Primary is a road safety education program supported by a qualified teacher engaged for a 45-minute duration per school visit and four age-appropriate lessons are offered. Lessons are reviewed annually with a framework established to assist teachers to identify the appropriate road safety presentation for each class.
