Tabatha (Tabs) was injured in October of 2014 in a motorcycle accident involving a car. Tabs sustained a brain injury, multiple orthopaedic and medical injuries and became a LSS participant in the Scheme’s first year.
Tabs worked closely with her Service Planner to engage in rehabilitation for her injuries and come to terms with the changes in her life. Like many participants, there were lots of challenges for Tabatha post injury, physical, psychological and social.
Early in Tabs’ rehabilitation she was supported by BIRCH (Brain Injury Rehabilitation Community and Home), and then she continued to progress her rehabilitation goals by working with a team of private providers arranged by her Service Planner.
Today Tabs has a vastly different life to her preinjury life. She is engaged to be married to her partner who she has known for many years pre-MVA but started a relationship with 5 years ago. She lives with her mother and is supported also by her adult daughter who is due to have her first baby in January. Tabs continues to experience headaches and poor vision as a result of the motor vehicle accident, which impacts her ability to drive. She continues to require support with meal preparation, which is provided by attendant carers. Tabs has always been physically active and now regularly attends the gym and hikes with her best friend (rather than with a support worker as she did initially post injury).
Over 10 years post injury Tabs has crafted a new life that is different to her preinjury one but holds meaning and purpose for her.
