It’s hard to believe that the Lifetime Support Scheme is
now 8 months into its life.
The LSA team has achieved a great deal in that time, yet there are so many emerging issues and developments that we are working through, and we are all continuously learning.
We now have 21 participants in the Scheme – these are people who have suffered very severe injuries as a result of a car accident since 1 July last year. The types of injuries are in line with those of New South Wales, with around three-quarters of our participants suffering traumatic brain injury and a quarter spinal cord injuries.
Our service planners, who are all allied health professionals, are working closely with our participants and their families to assist with their rehabilitation. They work hard to see participants are discharged from hospital as early as possible, and the provision of home-based therapy has helped that cause.
I am glad to see some of our participants have already reached important recovery milestones, including being assessed to drive with modified vehicles or planning for getting back to employment.
We really appreciate the relationships our team has established with our health care system, particularly the staff at the Royal Adelaide and Flinders Hospitals and Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. With such strong two-way communication, we are better able to provide comfort to participants and their families.
I must also add that the working relationship we have enjoyed with the South Australian Police has been outstanding, and I thank them for their care and consideration.
It was a privilege in December for the LSA to collaborate with the Brain Injury Network SA and ParaQuad SA to celebrate the United Nations International Day of People with a Disability. Some photos of that day are in this newsletter. It was an enormously fun event held in Light Square and wonderful to welcome so many people to learn about what each organisation provides to those living with disability.
