This is my first update as Acting Chief Executive of the LSA and I’m honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead the organisation while the selection process for a permanent Chief Executive is underway.
Having been a senior executive at the LSA since its inception, I have a deep commitment and understanding of the importance and value of the scheme to its participants and the wider community.
In addition to providing exceptional services and care to participants, our dedicated team has a genuine commitment to supporting research that will ultimately enhance the high-quality services we provide them.
We were very pleased this month to have awarded a grant to Adelaide-based biotechnology company SKIN Tissue Engineering to support their unique tissue culturing process. The process can significantly help burns victims by growing large areas of new skin from a small piece of donor skin in less than a month.
In another exciting development, we recently sealed a partnership with Brain Injury SA to provide an intensive, person-centred rehabilitation program for participants who have sustained a traumatic brain injury. This is an outstanding program designed for participants who are determined to fast-track their rehabilitation goals, and we’re thrilled to partner with Brain Injury to deliver this program.
Scheme participants continue to inspire us everyday as they meet their rehabilitation goals and get back to living their best lives.
I was so proud in August when participant Alexey Vasilev was the recipient of Brain Injury SA’s Outstanding Achievement Award during Brain Injury Awareness Week. Alexey has achieved a significant recovery from his serious injuries and has shown incredible motivation and drive throughout his rehabilitation.
Another participant, Richard Davis, who sustained a serious T4 spinal injury in 2014, volunteered for the Mount Barker CFS during the recent storms in Adelaide – taking living life to the fullest to a new level!
We are on the cusp of another International Day of People with Disability, and look forward to our ‘Celebrate on the Square’ event which we proudly host with partners PQSA and Brain Injury SA. We are excited to have The Voice star Rachael Leahcar perform for us and we are honored that South Australia’s Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC and Minister for Disabilities, the Honourable Leesa Vlahos will join us to open the event. We hope you can join us in Victoria Square on December 2 to celebrate people living with disability and all that they achieve.
